OUR HERD

Our horses live as nature intended—running wild as a herd in the open spaces of the Simalaha Conservancy. They come in for grooming, feeding, and guided rides, all while maintaining the freedom and natural bonds that keep them happy and healthy.

We care for a diverse herd of approximately 50 horses at our home stables at Chundukwa River Lodge, with 25+ safari horses based in the Simalaha during the horse safari season. Our herd includes Quarter Horses, Quarter Horse x Boerperds, Basotho Horses and Thoroughbred-Crosses. Among them, the Boerperd — a true South African breed — is especially known for its resilience and gentle temperament, traits that reflect the spirit of the land it hails from.

All of our horses are forward-going, steady, and kind-natured, ideal companions for riders and wildlife experiences alike.

Living and working remotely has required a strong foundation in animal husbandry and horse care. Most of our horses arrive ‘green’ and are gentled and trained by Doug personally. Once Doug is confident in their schooling, they are ridden out on the plains by our experienced horse wranglers, Mukela and Thomas, who help them gradually adjust to the bush and its wildlife. After each safari season in the Simalaha, the herd returns to Chundukwa, where they continue with regular training and fitness work. Here, they also meet with our farrier and equine dentist and receive ongoing care from Doug and the team.
